Catalyst, the new commercial non-fiction imprint at Hodder led by publisher Lauren Whelan, has unveiled its launch list, with books by Erica Davies, Africa Brooke and more, as well as its logo.
First announced in May, Hodder said Catalyst aimed to "supercharge growth for its roster of trailblazing talent; with the book as a catalyst for major platform expansion, online and offline”. It is described by Whelan as “a home for expansion” for the “very best and brightest talent”. The imprint logo, designed by Hart Studio, and social channels have been launched today (29th June).
Whelan said: “The digital landscape has exploded, alongside the popularity of mainstream self-help and books with a clear and tangible purpose. The influence of platforms with a USP or actionable message or promise have been at the beating heart of this revolution. People want to come together through the online worlds that they encompass – buying into an author or brand and championing this connection.
“The ripple effect can be astounding. As an editor, emerging or fast-growing communities and ‘undiscovered’ online treasures will always be a massive part of what excites me. There is nothing more rewarding than translating a green shoot of an idea into a successful, bestselling reality. It’s magical for everyone involved. A book can be a catalyst for someone’s profile within and way beyond the publishing space.”
Catalyst’s first acquisition is published in July, Style Chapters by Davies – alongside a multi-date UK book tour. In September, Catalyst will launch the new look paperback of Nick Grimshaw’s Soft Lad, along with the memoir from "Strictly Come Dancing" star Johannes Radebe, Jojo: Finally Home.
Also in September will come the first book by “viral sensation” Murphy’s Sketches: A Book to Brighten Your Day. The publisher says: “@murphys_sketches has rocketed by 100,000 followers since Whelan’s acquisition at the start of the year, and with a reach of millions each month, Kerri Cunningham’s work has been shared by huge names, including Molly-Mae Hague, Mrs Hinch and Stacey Dooley. It is a heart-warming collection of illustrations and words to help readers find joy in everyday moments.” Whelan acquired world all language rights directly from the author, and said: “I can’t wait for readers to enjoy the simple, beautiful pages that cater for how we’re all feeling and celebrate the small things.”
In spring 2024, Catalyst will publish Brooke’s debut self-help book, which was acquired in a seven-way auction. It will also continue to work with award-winning poet Hussain Manawer.
For publication in early 2024, Whelan has also acquired world rights, including audio and e-book, to You Are a Magnet by self-development and magnetism coach Amber Lyon from Carly Cook Agency.
Of Whelan, Katie Espiner, c.e.o of Hodder & Stoughton and Orion said: “Lauren is a brilliant, intuitive publisher with amazing commercial nous. She already has an excellent reputation in the industry for understanding what consumers want and working with creators to deliver brilliant books across a wide range of subjects. Her vision for Catalyst is hugely compelling and I know she will bring enormous energy, creativity and passion to everything she publishes.” Publicity director Rebecca Mundy and deputy marketing director Alice Morley are driving the communications strategy for the list.
