Lucent Dreaming, a new book publisher funded by the Book Council of Wales and Creative Wales, will launch its first book today at an event at the Pierhead, part of the Senedd estate in Cardiff.
Maps and Rooms: Writing from Wales takes the form of an anthology showcasing work from Literature Wales’ first Representing Wales cohort, a year-long scheme to develop writers from Wales.
The anthology features writing from Just Another Poet founder Taz Rahman and writer and artist Umulkhayr Mohamed, as well as works by writer and BAFTA award-winning actress Emily Burnett, and Future Wales Fellowship artist Durre Shahwar who co-founded Where I’m Coming From, Wales’ first open mic collective for creatives of colour, author and translator Shara Atashi, writer and playwright Nia Morais, writer Daniel Howell, writer and storyteller Phil Okwedy, writer and visual artist Jaffrin Khan, and National Poetry Competition winner Marvin Thompson.
The launch forms part of Singing the Sun in Flight: Poetry at the Senedd, a programme of events at the Senedd buildings organised by Literature Wales, the national company for the development of literature, and funded by the Welsh government.
With nine events over the next four years, the programme will platform diverse voices from across Wales to demonstrate Welsh government’s commitment to championing Wales’ literary culture, and engage people of all ages and backgrounds with the Senedd.
On setting up the new publishing house, editor-in-chief Jannat Ahmed said: "After several years of volunteer-led magazine publishing, this fund will be transformative for me, and for the book industry in Wales. We look forward to publishing books from emerging authors and artists in the UK and bringing Wales and Lucent Dreaming to international audiences."
