As part of their World Book Day celebrations, the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has launched a creative writing competition for children with a vision impairment judged by Michael Morpurgo.
The competition is open to any child or young person with a vision impairment aged between five and 12 years old who lives in the UK with submissions to be based on the theme of "adventure". The submission can be formatted as either a 500-word piece or submitted via MP3 audio or MP4 video.
The submissions will be read and shortlisted by the RNIB’s library team with the top three titles to be judged by children’s author Morpurgo. The winner will receive a set of 10 signed books by Morpurgo.
Through the competition, the RNIB aim to "celebrate different ways of seeing, sensing and taking part in an adventure that children have been on, or that they can imagine".
RNIB’s libraries engagement manager, Lara Marshall said: “Writing and being creative is beneficial and enjoyable for everyone, especially when going through big life-changes such as growing up. Hearing the unique perspectives of young writers who have a vision impairment will be a real privilege and I can’t wait to read the fabulous work that I’m sure will be created. We are delighted that Michael Morpurgo has agreed to pick the winner for us as part of his support for RNIB’s World Book Day celebrations.”
Any submissions should be made to lara.marshall@rnib.org.uk with the subject line "WBD competition". The deadline for entries is midnight on 18th February 2024.
