Two from Verso on Bread & Roses Award shortlist

Verso has two books on the shortlist for the Bread & Roses Award for Radical Publishing 2020, administered by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers.

The Bread & Roses Award seeks to celebrate excellence in the field of radical political non-fiction.

Verso titles Crippled: Austerity and the Demonization of Disabled People by Frances Ryan and Insurgent Empire: Anticolonial Resistance and British Dissent by Priyamvada Gopal have made this year's shortlist. They are joined by: Afropean: Notes from Black Europe by Johnny Pitts (Allen Lane); Disarming Doomsday: The Human Impact of Nuclear Weapons since Hiroshima by Becky Alexis-Martin (Pluto Press); The Government of No One: The Theory and Practice of Anarchism by Ruth Kinna (Pelican); and Sensible Footwear: A Girl's Guide. A Graphic Guide to Lesbian and Queer History 1950–2020 by Kate Charlesworth (Myriad Editions).

Nik Gorecki, trustee for the Bread & Roses Award, said: “The shortlist for this year’s award is a great representation of the breadth of topics being tackled by radical writers publishing in the UK at this time. The Bread & Roses Award is now in its ninth year, and each year it gets harder and harder to get to a shortlist.”

This year's guest judges are all previous winners of the Bread & Roses Award: Helena Earnshaw, Angharad Penrhyn Jones and Hsiao-Hung Pai. The £500 prize will be awarded to the winner at a special event which is intended to be held in-person at some point in mid-September, but may take place online if necessary.
