Sir Elton John's ex-wife is claiming £3m in damages, saying he broke the terms of their divorce deal by writing about their marriage in bestselling autobiography Me (Pan Macmillan).
Renate Blauel has filed a case in the High Court saying parts of the book and the film “Rocketman” broke an agreement the pair reached in 1988 and claims this triggered long-term mental health problems, the BBC reported.
The court papers say the star agreed to remove passages about their marriage before the book was published last year, the corporation reported. However, she is still referred to on several pages, albeit in positive terms.
Sir Elton's team has denied any breaches or causing psychological harm, said the BBC.
Pan Macmillan, which won the book in an eight-publisher auction, has declined to comment on the claims.
The publisher released Me with much fanfare in October, backed by one of the biggest marketing campaigns it had ever mounted.
According to Nielsen BookScan, the title has sold 260,185 copies in hardback for £3.2m in the UK so far.
