Illustrator Jason Ford has given key workers a superhero makeover in a competition run by Laurence King Publishing (LKP).
The Super Book for Superheroes (LKP) artist sifted through submissions to the contest from families nominating a key worker they admired or were close to. Two NHS workers, a teacher, an army reservist and a supermarket employee were chosen to be given the superhero treatment alongside an LKP voucher.
They included Miss Davies, who was nominated by her Year 4 pupil Isabella, aged nine. The youngster said: “She is really kind and funny and is working really hard at the moment. She sends us lots of work to do so we don’t miss out on our learning and funny video messages that make me laugh. Also, last week a dog did a wee on her foot so I think she deserves something nice to happen to her! She is also still sometimes going to our school to teach the children of other key workers.
Dr Emma Young was entered into the contest by friend Lisa for her work in Newham General Hospital, one of the areas worst hit by Covid-19.
Also undergoing a transformation was army reservist Martin, who was nominated by partner Emily as her “unsung hero” after spending the last two months building pop-up hospitals in London, delivering PPE across Birmingham and working in mobile testing units without taking a day off.
Meanwhile, seven-year-old Hope nominated her medic father, writing: “I nominate my daddy because he works in a hospital and I have a lot of health problems so daddy moved out to keep me safe from the coronavirus. I miss him.”
Finally, University of Dundee student Evie became a hero after dealing with panic buyers at Asda grabbing all the loo roll.
Her mother Tania said: “She’ll take on anything and she’s done a lot of part time jobs in the past, but being thrown into the fray of toilet roll shortages and crazy restocking… I was and am very proud of her. The young women in the supermarkets take a lot of verbal abuse from people and she copes with it all. She’s a real star.”
