HCCB gift book invites the nation to Be More Paddington

HarperCollins Children's Books is releasing How to Be More Paddington: A Book of Kindness, a gift book featuring inspirational quotes from Michael Bond's beloved bear alongside Peggy Fortnum’s original illustrations.

World rights for How to Be More Paddington were secured by publishing director Kate Hayler, from Hilary Delamere at The Agency, representing Bond, and from the Fortnum estate.

Released in colour hardback in November 2020, the book is packed with "touching and funny" quotes. The publisher explained: “For over 60 years, whatever the situation Paddington has always responded with kindness. From arriving in London and winning the hearts of the Brown family, to sharing elevenses with Mr Gruber and lending a paw around the neighbourhood, he tries to do his very best for others . . . even if there are a few well-intentioned mishaps along the way!”

Hayler said: “‘We are thrilled to be publishing this gorgeous book of classic Paddington quotes, beautifully illustrated by Peggy Fortnum. Sometimes poignant and often hilarious – Paddington’s kindness always shines through whatever the situation. This is sure to be a gift to be treasured.”

The Paddington books have sold over 40 million copies worldwide and his adventures have been translated into 40 different languages, the publisher said. He is also the star of two blockbuster films – “Paddington” and “Paddington 2”, which was nominated for three BAFTAs.

Karen Jankel, Bond’s daughter, said: “Like most writers my father based his characters on people in his own life and, given that he was such a kind and polite man himself, perhaps it's little wonder that he passed these qualities on to Paddington.  This book of his quotes is a lovely reminder of how much better our world would be if everyone had a similar outlook on life.”
