Željka Marošević is joining Jonathan Cape as editorial director next year.
Marošević joins the imprint on 1st February 2021 from Daunt Books Publishing, where she has worked since 2016.
During her time at Daunt Books Publishing she has published debut authors such as Kathryn Scanlan, Amina Cain and Pulitzer Prize-nominated Hernan Diaz, authors in translation such as Elisa Shua-Dusapin and forthcoming works by Scholastique Mukasonga, and bought established names such as Mary Gaitskill and Dani Shapiro to the Daunt list. Between 2017 and 2019 Marošević was co-editor of the White Review, overseeing a relaunch of the magazine, and discovering and editing many new writers. Between 2013 and 2016 she was managing director of Melville House UK, where she published Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts. She started her publishing career on the HarperCollins graduate scheme and went on to work at Fourth Estate. She was named as a Bookseller Rising Star in 2014. In 2017 she was shortlisted for the Kim Scott Walwyn Prize (for outstanding women in publishing) and won a LBF Trailblazer Award.
Marošević said: "I have had such a happy five years at Daunt Books Publishing and I am so proud of how the imprint has grown and all the brilliant authors I've had the luck to publish. I'm going to miss my wonderful colleagues and all of our booksellers. I have long admired the Jonathan Cape list and think it's the very best in the English language, so I'm delighted to be joining the team. I feel honoured and excited to build on the imprint's remarkable heritage and to play a part in its future."
Michal Shavit, publishing director at Jonathan Cape, said: "I have long admired Željka’s publishing from her days at Melville House, the White Review and in the last five years, Daunt Books. She shows singular vision, flair, passion and great entrepreneurial nous in her acquiring and publishing. We couldn’t be happier to welcome her to Jonathan Cape and Vintage and to see her contribute to the present and future of the list."
