Granta Books has acquired a new novel from Jenny Offill, author of the Folio-shortlisted Dept. of Speculation.
Bought on outline, American Weather tells the story of a librarian-cum-fake-shrink who finds herself drawn into the polarised world of left-wingers worried about extreme weather and right-wingers worried about the decline of western civilisation. A barometer of the current climate in America, the novel about hope and despair, fear and comfort as it plays out in times of meteorological and political turbulence.
Editorial director Laura Barber said: "Jenny Offill's Dept. of Speculation is a novel that readers not only admired but fell headlong in love with, and this new book promises the same irresistible combination of stylistic innovation, linguistic exhilaration, humour, truth and sheer emotional intensity. We couldn't be more delighted and excited to be publishing Jenny again."
Barber acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Judith Murray at Greene & Heaton, on behalf of Sally Wofford-Girand at Union Literary, for publication in Autumn 2018. Knopf will be publishing in the US in fall 2018.
Offill's previous novel Dept. of Speculation was published by Granta in 2015.
