Otter-Barry Books is working with Bounce Marketing and Grantham Book Services to distribute a Ukrainian language children’s book for refugees in the UK.
The book, Najmoisha Mama, written by Halyna Kyrpa and illustrated by Hrasya Oliyko, is being distributed by publishers across Europe, co-ordinated by German publisher Moritz Verlag.
Janetta Otter-Barry, publisher, said: “We want to help Ukrainian children arriving in the UK from the war in Ukraine feel comforted and a little more at home. We hope that by providing a book in their own language we will help them to do so.”
The book is described as a “warm-hearted ode to mothers everywhere” where one little girl writes down everything she knows about her mother. She tells how she hopes to make her mum a queen at midnight on New Year’s Eve, but they both fall asleep before the magic can work. Her mother is good, gentle, fair and patient. She is kind to stray cats and gentle with dolls. She has a beautiful smile and she knows something very special – that there’s a baby in her tummy, a baby brother who will join the family very soon.
Robert Snuggs, managing director at Bounce, said: “Bounce is delighted to support this important initiative by Otter-Barry Books, which we know will be welcomed by booksellers who are being asked on a regular basis for children’s books in the Ukrainian language.”
