Pavilion has scooped the long-awaited second graphic novel from Pam Smy, author and illustrator of Thornhill (David Fickling Books), the first title in a new children’s illustrated fiction list for over sevens.
Children’s book publisher Neil Dunnicliffe acquired world rights all language rights for The Hideaway direct from the author. It will be published in September 2020.
The book, aimed at middle grade readers right up to adults, is told in two alternating narratives exploring different aspects of the same event. One tells of runaway Billy McKena's experience of hiding away in an overgrown graveyard. The other explains the situation at home and the police search for Billy. It will be illustrated throughout with tonal and textured black and white drawings.
Dunnicliffe said: “Pam provides that rare combination of brilliant, gripping writing and stunning illustration, as shown so marvellously in her debut Thornhill. The Hideaway has a very moving and exciting story with elements of the supernatural, and Pam’s art for the book is so beautiful that every page is a delight. This book also marks the launch of Pavilion Children’s Books new fiction list, where we will be publishing a select number of innovative illustrated fiction titles.”
Smy added: “I have watched with interest the increasing investment in high quality illustrated children's books at Pavilion over the last couple of years and have appreciated how the children’s publishing team have built a successful list of both established and emerging illustrators. I am excited that Pavilion are setting up a new fiction list and delighted that I will be part of it.”
