The “Penguin Podcast”, a fortnightly interview series featuring leading Penguin authors, has been redesigned to provide a new visual online identity.
First launched in 2015, the podcast has become a prominent voice in arts podcasting and its rebranding coincides with the podcast hitting a 4.5 million downloads, the publisher said. The newly refreshed podcast, hosted by radio and TV presenter Nihal Arthanayake, will be available today (9th February).
Tim Lane, Penguin’s creative director, in collaboration with Loz Ives, co-founder and creative director at Fieldwork, created a fresh design approach inspired by the first Penguin Books published in the 1930s. This redesign, which employs bold geometric shapes, a selective colour palette, black sans typography, and generous white space, now aligns with the Penguin brand online.
Lane said: “The principal aim of re-branding the Penguin Podcast was to give the Podcast the same visual identity as the Penguin brand online. After visiting the Penguin archives in Bristol for research and inspiration, we noted that the first Penguin books had distinctive design qualities and it was their simplicity and confidence which informed our new style guide. By adding an illustrative approach to a new colour palette, created by Loz Ives, we refreshed the Podcast design, making it brighter and more exciting.”
Indira Birnie, senior manager, Penguin Audiences commented: “Over the years, the Penguin Podcast has featured an incredible array of prize-winning novelists, ground-breaking thinkers and genre-defying artists, and I’m delighted that these insightful conversations have resonated with so many. Reaching 4.5 million downloads is a huge milestone, and it’s a testament to the collaboration and creativity of everyone who played a part in bringing these conversations to life – particularly our masterful hosts Nihal Arthanayake and Isy Suttie.
“The podcasting landscape has moved on in leaps and bounds since the Penguin Podcast first launched in 2015, so it’s our hope that our new look firmly signposts our flagship podcast as a leading voice in arts podcasting, showing off our content in the best light and enticing new listeners to become part of our loyal audience.”
