Bestselling writer Peter James has said he was "moved to tears" after Queen Camilla revealed that her favourite fictional detective was James’ Roy Grace.
Speaking on the "Queen’s Reading Room Podcast", and in answer to who her favourite fictional detective was, the Queen said: "I think chief superintendent Grace from the Peter James books. I think because there are so many of his books and I started at the very beginning. So the nice thing about his books is that, although there is a pretty terrifying story that goes on, you’ve always got the thread of Grace and his life and what’s happening in his life and there are lots of twists and turns and it just keeps you on your toes."
In response, James told The Bookseller: “I had heard from her team that they would be making a special announcement on my episode and I was moved to tears listening Her Majesty Queen Camila’s words about my Roy Grace books. She is such a wonderful advocate for authors and reads so widely that it is truly humbling to have Roy Grace chosen as her favourite detective out of so many brilliant literary sleuths from Sherlock Holmes to Poirot onwards.
"My family has a long history with the Royal Family, my mother was glove maker to Queen Elizabeth and I wish she was still alive as she would have been so proud, so it is a very personal honour for me and I look forward to continuing to support the Queen’s Reading Room—and writing more books featuring Her Majesty’s favourite detective!"
