Philip Reeve & Sarah McIntyre have won The Alligator’s Mouth Award 2024 with their book Adventuremice: Otter Chaos, published by David Flicking Books.
Elys Dolan, winner of the 2023 award, and a judge for the 2024 award, presented the duo with their Alligator’s Mouth trophies during a special ceremony on Thursday 20th June.
On accepting the award, Reeve said: “I can take the opportunity to say that she (Sarah McIntyre) is a genius and I’m very lucky to be working with her. We’d both like to thank our brilliant editors Liz Cross and Meggie Dennis, and all the other lovely people at David Flicking Books that make it possible to work together on these books. I hope that there are going to be many more of them! Thank you so much for this award.”
Margaret Wallace-Jones and Tony West, co-owners of the Alligator’s Mouth Bookshop and editors on the upcoming anthology, commented: “The mighty Reeve/McIntyre partnership has created some of our favourite titles, so it gives us great joy that their thrilling full-colour adventure about nautical mice navigating the turbulent waters of the Mouse Islands has won the 2024 Alligator’s Mouth Award.
“It was a fantastic shortlist and judges had a tough decision; AdventureMice: Otter Chaos is a worthy winner. Philip and Sarah’s creative chemistry has produced a funny, exciting, and joyfully beautiful book, beloved both by children and by Team Alligator. We are so delighted with this result.”
Elys Dolan said of the book: “It does that great thing of funny not being the opposite of serious. There’s some really funny writing and really funny illustrating in there and they work so well together. I love an ensemble cast, different mice with different skills and backgrounds. It’s such a masterclass on worldbuilding, there’s so much depth to the world that’s created."
The award was founded in 2018 by The Alligator’s Mouth in partnership with the Bright Agency with the aim of championing and celebrating highly illustrated fiction for children aged six to eight years old. Books wholesaler Gardners returned this year as an official partner of the award and is offering up to 50% discount on both longlisted and shortlisted titles until the end of July.
