Pluto Press is launching a bespoke audio programme, with audiobooks available for sale directly through the publisher’s website.
The first six Pluto Audio titles are now available, with 12 more planned for 2023. The books will be downloadable through the Glassboxx app. Pluto Press is working with non-fiction audio production specialist Sound Understanding to narrate the books.
Veruschka Selbach, director of Pluto Press, said: “Audiobooks fulfil an important part of Pluto’s mission—to make timely interventions in contemporary struggles—by making the content of our books available to a wider audience, an audience who prefers to listen rather than read.
“We have been experimenting with audiobooks since 2015, either working with ACX or selling rights. These options work, but we aren’t reaching our listeners directly. By creating a sales channel for our audiobooks through our website, we no longer have to compromise. Eventually we plan to make audio a standard format for all our books.”
ACX is a marketplace where authors, literary agents, publishers, and other rights holders can connect with narrators, engineers, recording studios, and other producers to produce an audiobook.
Glassboxx added: “This collection is not just timely, but challenging and outspoken—and why shouldn’t a collection as direct in its themes be as directly available to readers? We’re excited to be working with Pluto Press to make audiobooks available through their website and are looking forward to seeing more of their titles in audio as this format grows.”
Sound Understanding also commented: “We are delighted to be working with Pluto on their impressive new audiobook list, Pluto Audio. This is an exciting selection of titles, and it has been a privilege to help bring these important subjects to a new audience.”
