The Pigeonhole, an interactive digital book club providing pre-publication serialisations, is looking for support to take over the platform as the business has become "unsustainable as a standalone enterprise".
The aim of the platform is to give authors and readers the opportunity to interact. Ten-day serialisations make it onto social media, impacting Amazon, Waterstones, and Goodreads reviews on publication day.
The company said downward pressure on project pricing over the past 18 months has led to the business becoming unsustainable as a standalone enterprise. The company book club arm, a secondary revenue stream, has also suffered since the pandemic but, according to the company, "retains its potential to deliver content to firms and organisations".
Jacob Cockcroft, founder of The Pigeonhole, said: "Our mission was to use smartphones to create a unique and immersive reading experience — and we have achieved this. With the help of our users we have created many beautiful things: from propelling Ken Follett to number one in the charts and helping to launch the careers of countless authors, through to curating physical and digital author events.
"Authors regularly tell us that the insights they get from our serialisations are both the most terrifying and the most important they ever receive! I take this as our finest accomplishment. Over 600,000 comments have been posted and 20,000 book reviews have been posted.
"The kindness, empathy and wonderful spirit found in the pages of our books proves that positive digital communities can still be created. The messages we have received since sending news to our users has been incredibly moving and we are still investigating avenues to keep The Pigeonhole running."
