Penguin Random House is to partner with Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Consumer Products on a worldwide publishing deal for "Avatar" and its four upcoming film sequels.
Released in 2009, director James Cameron’s "Avatar" is the highest-grossing film in motion picture history, with box office takings of nearly $2.8bn (£2.09bn). The Oscar-winning film starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver tells the story of a paraplegic marine who is dispatched to the planet Pandora on a mission to facilitate communication with the indigenous Na'vi people and pave the way for the large-scale mining of the planet.
The first sequel, out of four, is due for release on 18th December 2020.
PRH will work with Cameron to develop and release a wide range of books across adult and children’s formats, in multiple territories and languages across the world.
The partnership will work to expand and enrich the "Avatar" universe through a multi-year publishing strategy that will begin during the lead-up to "Avatar 2" and continue through and beyond the release of "Avatar 5".
Initial titles will be released under the US and British Commonwealth publishing teams of Del Rey Books, Random House Children’s Books, Cornerstone Publishing, Dorling Kindersley, and Penguin Random House Children’s UK, with additional territories and imprints to follow. Audiobook editions will be published by Penguin Random House Audio.
