Juno Books, a queer and feminist bookshop, will open its doors in Sheffield on 8th October.
The brainchild of “lifelong bibliophiles” Rosie May and Sarah Scales, the shop started life as a website that launched in April, alongside a monthly book club.
“Juno Books came to us as a fully formed idea over a glass of wine in Sarah’s garden during the first phase of the pandemic,” May said. “We were both missing being part of Sheffield’s wonderful diverse communities and finding solace in reading – and now we’ve brought those things together with the launch of Juno Books.
“We’re proud to be part of the highly creative indie scene in Sheffield and to play a part in creating a warm, welcoming space for Sheffield’s queer and feminist community.”
The new shop, which is located at 24 Chapel Walk, will stock both adult and children’s books, with a focus on queer and feminist voices. It will be open Tuesday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 5pm.
Scales said: “We are so excited to finally open the doors to Juno Books, having both dreamed of being bookshop owners as children. It has been a real labour of love for the past couple of years and we have had so much support from Sheffield’s wonderful bookish community, from local publishers to sign writers. We hope this collective effort brings as much joy to everyone else as it has brought to us.”
Little, Brown editorial director Sarah Castleton, who is based in Sheffield, commented: “I’m so happy that Juno Books is becoming bricks and mortar, a new chapter for them and in the long and important history of independent, radical bookshops here in Sheffield. This is such a brilliant development for Rosie and Sarah, whose energy for queer and intersectional feminist publishing is so very welcome for all publishers.
“I know this will be a welcoming space for readers to find community. Hachette is delighted to wish them every success and we look forward to working with them in the days, months and years to come.”
