Quercus has announced plans to give staff a reading morning for its upcoming title Life Hacks for a Little Alien by Alice Franklin, scheduled for publication by riverrun in early 2025.
On Friday 21st June, staff have been invited to curl up with the novel – which is described as a "heart-warming novel about the linguistic awakening of a girl referred to as Little Alien" – for the whole morning as part of the publisher’s #LittleAlienReadingDay.
Commissioning editor Jasmine Palmer pre-empted UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Clare Alexander at Aitken Alexander in July 2023. The novel has also been pre-empted by Little, Brown in the US, DTV in Germany and Garzanti in Italy.
Palmer said: “The young girl at the centre of Life Hacks for a Little Alien is wise, courageous, funny, inquisitive and loving. But despite all her magic, we also come to learn that she sees herself as a Little Alien, as if born on the wrong planet, speaking an unknown language. Alice Franklin’s novel will make you laugh, and cry, and feel seen and I can’t wait to share its magic with all my colleagues.”
Life Hacks for a Little Alien celebrates reading, language and libraries and will appeal to lovers of Mark Haddon, Gail Honeyman and Bobby Palmer, the publisher says, adding that publication will be accompanied by an “energetic” grassroots publicity and marketing campaign.
Alice Franklin is a copywriter based in London. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. The character of Little Alien in her debut novel is partly informed by her own experience of autism.
