Ian Rankin, Monica Ali and Booker winner Damon Galgut have been announced as part of this year’s Manchester Literature Festival line-up.
The festival, now in its 17th year, runs from 7th to 23rd October in venues across the city. Women’s Prize-winning Susanna Clarke, Maggie O’Farrell, Max Porter and Natalie Haynes will also be in attendance.
On 12th October, Rankin will be talking to the former Makar of Scotland and award-winning writer Jackie Kay about A Heart Full of Headstones (Orion), his new thriller starring Scottish DI John Rebus. Clarke will discuss her work and imagination in conversation with fellow author Max Porter on the 21st.
The Bafta-winning Welsh screenwriter of “Gavin & Stacey”, actor, comedian and novelist Ruth Jones, will be in conversation about her forthcoming novel, Love Untold (Transworld), on 7th October, and South African novelist Damon Galgut will discuss his Booker winner, The Promise (Vintage), on 10th October.
Rob Delaney, the American actor, comedian and writer, will be in conversation about his forthcoming book, A Heart that Works (Coronet), and will talk about the loss of his son Henry, his passion for the NHS and free healthcare, the joys of comedy, acting and writing and the love that underpins it all on 19th October.
Cathy Bolton and Sarah-Jane Roberts, co-directors of the festival, said: “Friendship. Family. Joy. Grief. Community. Solidarity. Love. These are some of the things that united us [over] the last few years and they’re themes that run through this year’s festival programme.”
Kaye Mitchell, director of the Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester, said: “In what can feel like an embattled age, literature and culture have never been more important. Whether consolatory, contentious or celebratory, the diverse examples of contemporary writing showcased by Manchester Literature Festival are always a spur to deep thinking and brilliant conversation.
“The 2022 programme promises to be as stimulating as ever and we’re delighted to continue our partnership with this landmark annual event.”
