Ebury Press has acquired a memoir from Crystal Rasmussen, the drag persona of journalist Tom Rasmussen, for release in February 2019.
Editorial director Sara Cywinski acquired UK and commonwealth rights from Zoe Ross at United Agents, to publish in hardback and e-book.
Described as a "frank and funny" diary, with shades of Bridget Jones and Belle de Jour, in the book Rasmussen charts Crystal's day-to-day adventures over the course of a year.
"It’s a place where the unspeakable becomes the commendable, and is a rare and insightful look at queerness, class and community," according to Ebury.
Cywinski commented: "I loved Crystal’s proposal from the very first line to the last. It was hilarious, clever and unexpectedly emotional. The whole Ebury team was eager to acquire the book, and we’re incredibly excited to see it published next year so that everyone else can experience the joy of reading it too. We have big ambitions for the publicity and marketing campaign to launch the book."
Rasmussen said: "I think drag queens are often used as glamorous props or catty accessories, so I’m very much looking forward to writing about what the actual experience of living as one is really like — offering insight into the best, worst and most hilarious parts of my life. I’m really excited to be working with Sara and Ebury, who understand the need for intersectional voices, varied experiences and diverse stories."
Rasmussen is contributing editor at LOVE Magazine, columnist at Refinery29, regular fashion and features contributor at i-D Magazine, and Dazed & Confused, and a music reviewer and regular contributor at the Independent. He is also a singer in a drag band called Denim.
