ReadingZone launches World Book Day picture book competition

Children’s books website ReadingZone has launched a competition for children and young people to create a picture book for World Book Day, judged by author and illustrator Sarah McIntyre. 

The competition is open to those aged four to 18 and will run until 23rd April. The winners will be announced in June 2022. Picture books entered for the award can be made by individuals and groups and any media can be used. Each picture book can be up to 24 A4 pages

Each category winner will receive £100 of books and the overall winner will also receive a free author or illustrator visit for their school or library. Runners-up in each category will also win a book bundle of 10 books for their school or library.

McIntyre will choose the winning entries across three categories: Young Creators (ages four to six years); Primary (ages seven years plus); and Secondary (ages 11 years plus). One overall winner will be chosen. 

There is an additional Achievement Award for the most enthusiastic "behind the scenes" activities that have gone into making picture book entries, such as the whole school getting involved, or creators sharing their picture books beyond their classrooms or homes.

Schools will have access to a range of ReadingZone resources created with McIntyre, including tips and film material, to help children and young people get started on their projects.

All schools, libraries and homes that take part in the competition will receive a certificate and feedback about their picture books from the judges.
