Popular historical novelist Ben Kane has been signed by Rosie de Courcy at Preface for a book based on the life of legendary slave rebel Spartacus. De Courcy bought world rights in the book from Charlie Viney at The Viney Agency for a "very significant sum".
The book will appear in 2012. Kane's 'Forgotten Legion' trilogy climaxed last summer with The Road to Rome which peaked at Number 4 in the Sunday Times fiction bestseller chart. His Soldier of Carthage trilogy kicks off next year.
De Courcy said: "Ben is one of the best storytellers I have ever published; the marriage of a master storyteller with one of the greatest stories in history is an editor"s dream come true."
Kane said: "Like many people, I have long admired Spartacus, one of history's most iconic figures. To have the honour of writing about this extraordinary man and the slave rebellion that he inspired is thrilling beyond measure".
Stanley Kubrick's Hollywood film of 'Spartacus' and the slave rebellion of 72-3 BC appeared in 1960, itself based on Howard Fast's 1951 novel of the same name.
