Viking will be selling copies of Michelle Obama’s upcoming autobiography, Becoming, to PRH UK staff for £5-apiece on publication day (13th November) to raise money for the Advocacy Academy, a non-profit social impact organisation based in Brixton.
One of the books for sale will be signed by Obama herself. It will randomly be on sale on the day, so all attending PRH staff members will be in with a chance to get their hands on the limited edition item.
Sales of the book to staff will benefit the Advocacy Academy, a youth movement that is "working to unleash the power of young people who are passionate about making a difference in the world". Its flagship programme offers a six-month fellowship to young leaders from marginalised communities, while other recent work includes the Class of 2018’s viral campaign, Legally Black, pushing for better black representation in the UK's media.
Some of the young advocates will be visiting PRH offices as part of its Penguin Voices talks series for staff to talk about their work, and staff are being encouraged to offer their mentoring skills to the organisation on a voluntary basis.
Last month the former First Lady announced a 10-stop stadium book tour across the US to promote her new memoir featuring "intimate and honest conversations" (13th November to 17th December).
Her memoir was secured by PRH in a joint book deal with Barack Obama said to be worth up to $65m. Becoming is set to be released in 28 languages worldwide, publishing in hardback, e-book and audiobook on 13th November.
