Sally Rooney’s Intermezzo has been awarded Foyles Book of the Year for 2024.
The author’s latest book is described as "an exquisitely written, poignant novel of two brothers grieving the death of their father".
Rooney’s novel triumphed over a shortlist which included titles like Gillian Anderson’s Want (Bloomsbury), Percival Everett’s Booker Prize-shortlisted James (Pan Macmillan), Asako Yuzuki’s Butter (HarperCollins) and Olga Tokarczuk’s The Empusium (Fitzcarraldo), among other books.
Foyles bookseller Ross said that the "themes of brotherhood, grief and loneliness are written so masterfully, proving that Rooney is a once-in-a-generation talent", while bookseller Charlotte added that she "loved the characters, and found their complex vulnerabilities incredibly moving". Bookseller Christopher described Intermezzo as a "great novel from a master storyteller".
