Poet Savannah Brown is launching her own independent press next year, focusing on speculative fiction and works of poetry from young writers.
The American writer, who is based in London will kick off Doomsday Press’ list with her own collection, Closer, Baby, Closer, publishing on 14th February 2023. The collection examines love, sex and breaking up. Her work more generally deals with themes of existence, vulnerability and intimacy in the digital age.
Brown is author of two novels published by Penguin Random House UK and two poetry collections. She has more than half a million subscribers on YouTube and is the Poetry Society’s patron for the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award 2022.
"Doomsday is the culmination of a great deal of curiosity, trying and trend-apathy," she said. "What I’m most excited about is the opportunity to curate a weird and wonderful list of sharp, young writers who might have struggled to find a home for their work elsewhere. I’m so thrilled to finally be in a position to confidently facilitate that.
"Closer is the most personal work I’ve written to date and also the best which I don’t know is a coincidence. Two of my favourite things to think about are intimacy and being alive – but being alive today, specifically – and I hope I’ve said something resonant about the both of them. I can’t wait to see what people think of it, in a borderline masochistic sort of way."
Later this year, Brown is going on tour with her poetry and will be appearing in London, Brighton, Edinburgh, Manchester, Norwich, Bristol and Glasgow.
Submissions for publication will open from September.
