HarperFiction has made a string of promotions and new appointments in its marketing team, led by Sarah Shea, appointed as marketing director while Hannah O’Brien takes on a newly created role as director of marketing strategy.
The publisher said: “HarperFiction’s promotions, alongside new hires, strengthen the award-winning team and recognise the exceptional work delivered over the past year, including a British Book Awards shortlisting for How to Kill Your Family for Marketing Strategy of the Year, a Futurebook Excellence Award shortlisting and multiple Book Marketing Society award wins.”
Shea joined the team as senior marketing manager in 2017 and the publisher described how she “has played a crucial role in the division’s publishing, leading some of the most successful campaigns”.
Roger Cazalet, associate publisher for adult commercial publishing, said: “Sarah brings smart strategic thinking and original creative vision to the division, and has taken an already hugely successful team to even greater heights. She’s a superb and supportive manager, adeptly leading the team through the ever-changing publishing landscape; an energetic and passionate voice in the HarperFiction senior team; a fantastic colleague; and quite simply a huge pleasure to work with.”
O’Brien, formerly senior marketing director for HarperFiction & Avon, returns from maternity leave in the newly created role of director of marketing strategy, reporting in to group sales and rights director Anna Derkacz, in a project-based role.
After joining HarperFiction as marketing assistant in 2010, O’Brien was most recently promoted to senior marketing director in 2021. In her new role, O’Brien will support the marketing teams across the trade divisions to provide strategic leadership and deliver excellence in all aspects of HarperCollins marketing and give guidance and expertise on selected key book campaigns. She will also work closely with group sales and digital teams, particularly in the areas of social media and direct to consumer activity.
Derkacz said: "Hannah’s reputation in the industry is second to none, so I’m extremely excited about this new chapter for her at HarperCollins. Hannah’s exceptional marketing experience, excellent author relationships and her many award-winning campaigns speak for themselves. Hannah will be central to supporting our divisional teams in delivering our growth plans over the coming years.”
Within the HarperFiction marketing team, Salter is promoted to deputy marketing director, having spearheaded the award-winning campaign for Rebecca Kuang’s Yellowface and led the charge on major campaigns for Jeffrey Archer, Dawn O’Porter and Cecelia Ahern.
Maddy Marshall is promoted to head of brand marketing, recognising her strategic work in building key brand authors including Agatha Christie, Jeffrey Archer and Lucy Clarke.
Sian Richefond is promoted to senior marketing executive, having established the UK’s biggest SFF Tiktok channel, @HarperVoyagerUK, and having worked on the award-winning campaigns for Rebecca Kuang’s Babel and Yellowface.
Emily Merrill who led the FutureBook Award-shortlisted industry-first student initiative at university freshers weeks, is promoted to junior marketing executive.
And finally, Vicky Joss joins as senior marketing manager from Bloodhound and Bonnier Books and Lipfon Tang joins from Quercus as marketing manager in the new year.
