Storytel Group has acquired a 70% majority stake in the Swedish publisher Bokfabriken, one of Sweden’s largest general publishing houses.
The current owners will retain a 30% stake and Lasse Brahme will continue as CEO of Bokfabriken.
In 2023, Bokfabriken reported sales of SEK65.7m (£4.8m) with an operating profit of SEK15.9m (£1.2m). Digital releases, comprising over 500 audiobook titles, accounted for over 70% of the publisher’s revenues in 2023.
Brahme said: “Storytel has made a fantastic journey and has revolutionised the entire book industry. As a content provider, Bokfabriken has been part of that journey from the start, and it therefore feels natural to continue together on this path, now that we are becoming part of Storytel Group. Together with our fantastic authors and Storytel, we look forward to taking storytelling, its concepts, and its technical solutions to the next level.”
The publisher has a strong presence in both print and digital formats and operates from offices in Malmö and Stockholm. Among its notable authors are Leffe Grimwalker, Anders Nilsson and David Baldacci.
Bodil Eriksson Torp, CEO of Storytel Group, added: “We are happy to welcome Bokfabriken to Storytel Group. Driven by entrepreneurship, they have established themselves as one of the leading publishers in the audio segment in Sweden and have a proven track record of publishing commercially successful content across various genres that resonates well with the Storytel audience.”
With Storytel Group as the majority shareholder, Bokfabriken will maintain its identity and continue to develop both new and established authors as an independent unit within Storytel Group.
The agreed purchase price will be paid in cash, and will be paid out of Storytel Group’s cash balance, ensuring that no further financing is needed.
