Carole Strachan has been named Seren’s new chief executive following the retirement of long-term publisher and c.e.o. Mick Felton.
Seren, which means “star” in Welsh, is an indie publishing house specialising in English-language writing from Wales. The press was founded by Cary Archard in 1981.
Strachan has worked for the National Trust, an Oxford college and a hospice charity, but has spent most of her career working in theatre and music, most recently as chief executive of the contemporary opera company, Music Theatre Wales. She is also a published author with Cinnamon Press and her third novel is due for publication in 2024.
Felton announced in December 2022 he would retire in 2023. At the time, Seren stated: “Seren will begin searching for a new publisher early next year, and Mick’s successor will be responsible for ensuring Seren remains an innovative, inclusive and sustainable publisher at the forefront of these changes."
The publisher says Strachan’s appointment “marks the beginning of an exciting new phase for Seren. Under her leadership, we will continue to champion writers and books from Wales, while also exploring new opportunities for the business”.
Strachan, who will be taking up her new position on Monday 25th September, said: “These are exciting times for book publishers and booksellers. My aim is to harness Seren’s literary excellence while at the same time safeguarding the financial well-being of the business so that even in the current, straitened times it can thrive and flourish.”
Sarah Morse, chair of the board of directors, added: “Carole brings many years of arts leadership experience and a genuine passion for voices from Wales to the role.”
