The Book Trade Charity has been nominated by the Association of Charitable Organisations (ACO) for the "Most Impactful Grant of the Year" in the national ACO 2024 Annual Awards.
The charity told "Peter’s Story", an anonymised but real example of a young publisher who is faced with potential homelessness. The Book Trade Charity worked with Peter to support him when escalating debts risked his home.
He said: "Without the Book Trade Charity, I would have been made homeless with my mum and now I’m a homeowner; I’ll never forget the speed with which they responded to me when I reached out, and how kind and empathetic they were. I would recommend the Book Trade Charity tenfold to anyone in the industry who feels like they are struggling, and they don’t know where to turn—they changed my life for the better and I’ll never forget it."
Ian Chapman, chair of the charity, said: "The team at the Book Trade Charity provide a safety net for colleagues like Peter and his family. I am so proud that they are being shortlisted for a national award and encourage each and every publisher, bookseller and printer to join us now in our mission to alleviate hardship for colleagues."
Isobel Dixon, president, said: "I am constantly admiring of the work that Vic Perry and the dedicated team at the Book Trade Charity do to support colleagues in need, right across the book trade and publishing industry. Providing a springboard for new entrants and a vital helping hand—it’s so brilliant that this excellence is being recognised by the Association of Charitable Organisations’ Awards with this shortlisting this year."
