The Bookseller is announcing the call for entries for the 2022 Rising Stars—the 12th edition of its annual celebration of the British and Irish book industry’s up-and-comers. The initiative will publish on 1st July.
Each year, the Rising Stars salutes around 40 book trade professionals who are tipped as future leaders of the trade. The lists are a mixture of those relatively early in their careers and long-serving professionals who have changed tack to help revitalise the industry.
Past honourees read like a who’s-who of the contemporary UK and Ireland book trade, including Alex Beecroft, now m.d. of Collins Education; Rachel Mills Literary’s Nelle Andrew, last year’s Agent of the Year winner at the British Book Awards; Sophie Lambert, who just prior to the London Book Fair was promoted to co-m.d. of C&W; and Sam Eades, who in March stepped up to publisher at Orion Fiction.
The Class of 2021 featured Micaela Alcaino, a shortlistee for Designer of the Year at the 2022 Nibbies; Zoe Ross, recently made deputy head of books at United Agents; and Marianne Tatepo, who early this year moved across Penguin Random House from Ebury to lead Square Peg.
One member of the 2022 list will be named the “Shooting Star”, a nominee the judges believe deserves slightly greater recognition. Last year’s Shooting Star was HarperFiction editorial director Phoebe Morgan, who is up for the 2022 Editor of the Year Nibbie.
Tom Tivnan, The Bookseller managing editor and founder of the Rising Stars, said: “Assembling our oft-imitated, never-replicated Rising Stars list is one of the highlights of my year—a highlight which has, in many ways, taken on a lot more importance recently, given the stresses and strains of the pandemic, which book trade professionals have responded to with innovation and creativity.”
To nominate a colleague, or yourself, send a testimonial outlining their/your accomplishments to tom.tivnan@thebookseller.com. Entries must be received by 13th May for consideration.
