The Borough Press has unveiled its immersive campaign for Tracy Chevalier’s new book, The Glassmaker, with a particular emphasis on indie bookshops, including planned activity for Independent Bookshop Week.
The novel is published in September 2024. Set in Venice, The Glassmaker opens in 1486 and spans five centuries, following the life of Orsola and her creations, a woman living on the Venetian island of Murano, who defies tradition to become a glassmaker like her father and brothers.
“The novel is as spellbinding and immersive as Chevalier’s many fans would expect, with beautiful prose, unforgettable characters and an unmatched sense of time and place,” the publisher said.
The Borough Press is also revealing an immersive animation, “bringing to life what will be the most captivating novel of 2024 and heralding its most ambitious marketing plan yet for the bestselling author”.
“Stunning proofs are landing across the trade, and the immersive animation will transport readers to timeless Venice. Some very lucky proof recipients will also get a hand-made Murano glass bead, brought back by the author from her last trip to Italy," the publisher said.
“A one-of-a-kind event will invite key retailers into the world of glassmaking, while an exciting competition to win a unique Murano glass piece will drive pre-orders.”
The Borough Press said there will be a “broad span” of UK events and a spread of print and broadcast interviews to accompany publication.
Chevalier said: “I have absolutely loved researching and writing The Glassmaker. Venice is one of the world’s amazing cities, and getting to know it well enough to set a book there has been a privilege – as well as a challenge to avoid the clichés. I am looking forward to hearing what retailers and readers make of the story, especially the playful way I handle time.”
Kate Elton, group m.d., said: “Every Tracy Chevalier novel is incredibly special, but The Glassmaker feels like one of those once-in-a-decade-if-you’re-lucky novels that are so original, so powerful, so beautifully written and such an unforgettable reading experience that you’re desperate to press it into the hands of everybody you know. Readers all around the world are going to fall in love with this extraordinary book.”
Chevalier has been visiting Venice regularly since her honeymoon there 30 years ago. She is the author of 11 novels, including A Single Thread, Remarkable Creatures and international bestseller Girl with a Pearl Earring (all published by The Borough Press).
