The Emma Press, an independent publisher based in Birmingham, has appointed James Trevelyan as director following a period of maternity cover from 2023.
Founder/publisher Emma Dai’an Wright continues on in her role in reduced hours, with Trevelyan leading the company and small team from their Birmingham office.
Trevelyan has previously held positions at Penned in the Margins and Arts Council England, alongside being a poet and playwright.
Trevelyan said: "It has been a thrill leading the Emma Press over the past two years, building on plans to become more embedded in our local area and make publishing more accessible to communities in the West Midlands. I’m excited to be able to carry on that work through two Arts Council funded projects in 2025, as well as an exciting publishing calendar, which includes our first novel for adults in April."
Since 2023, the Emma Press has successfully received more than £90,000 in funding for projects developing editors and young readers in the West Midlands".
The Emma Press was founded by Wright in 2012 and is based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. The press publishes poetry pamphlets, fiction chapbooks, short essay collections, illustrated poetry books and books for children. They also have a growing list of translations including titles from Latvia, Estonia, Indonesia, Spain and Sweden.

The Emma Press is also open for submissions from 4th to 18th February and is seeking proposals from unagented authors of full-length poetry collections for the first time. It is also keen to read proposals for memoir essay collections and novellas for adults, and poetry and fiction for children (8+).
Wright said: "I could not be happier that James has agreed to stay on. He’s done a phenomenal job leading the Emma Press since January 2023, especially with situating us more meaningfully in Birmingham. We are all so lucky to have him, and I know the press will continue to benefit from his leadership."
