The Female Leadership in Publishing (The FLIP) has launched its second comprehensive industry-wide workforce survey.
Designed as a "temperature check" for the publishing sector, this year’s survey builds on the insights gained in 2024, with refined questions informed by participant feedback and evolving trends. It also explores caring responsibilities, neurodiversity and the rise of AI.
The FLIP said that the “survey aims to acknowledge and celebrate the things that make publishing great; provide a comprehensive and genuine understanding of the career experiences of publishing professionals across the UK, and how these evolve from year to year”.
The survey also aims to “identify and call attention to areas that need improvement; and provide ideas for potential solutions and following The FLIP’s mission, drive positive change within the industry to foster a more inclusive and rewarding work environment for all”.
Last year’s inaugural survey provided insights into the experiences of the publishing workforce, uncovering high levels of imposter syndrome, challenges in achieving work-life balance, a lack of clarity regarding potential career progression, and difficulties posed by the rising cost of living.
Over 700 participants shared their views, helping to raise awareness about the strengths and challenges facing our industry and sparking important conversations.
Key findings included issues around workplace satisfaction – while 77% of respondents reported enjoying their work, significant issues around pay transparency, representation and mental health support remain – as well as concerns over living costs.
Around 58% of respondents disagreed that their salaries alone could cover living costs, rising to 76% for part-time workers and 68% for those with caregiving responsibilities.
Additionally, imposter syndrome was cited by many – 97% of respondents reported experiencing imposter syndrome, disproportionately affecting women and non-binary individuals.
Speaking about the survey, Cassie Rocks, co-director at The FLIP, said: “We were so pleased with the level of engagement in last year’s survey and especially moved by the honesty and transparency of the respondents.
“This year, we’re hoping for further reach, looking forward to seeing how things have evolved and excited about learning even more from participants’ experiences. We’ve also taken in valuable feedback, refining our questions to ensure that we capture even more meaningful data and that we concentrate our efforts on the themes that matter most to the industry.”
The survey, which will be open until 23rd February, can be accessed here. It is open to professionals at all levels, from all backgrounds and of all identities.
The FLIP actively encourages all individuals working in publishing to participate, providing an opportunity to voice their thoughts and feelings about their workplace experiences. All responses will be treated confidentially, and the aggregated results will be shared in a subsequent report.
