Tilted Axis Press has launched a crowdfunding campaign with the aim of raising £75,000 to continue publishing translated literature from around the world.
The independent publisher is based in London and publishes literature by Global Majority authors. Tomb of Sand by Geetanjali Shree, translated from Hindi by Daisy Rockwell, won the 2022 Booker International prize.
The money raised will be used to safeguard current positions at Tilted Axis, support translation fees and rights acquisitions, increase regional and international outreach and build business expertise.
"Over the past few years, the UK has seen a significant decrease in arts funding," said director Kristen Vida Alfaro. "In 2022, Arts Council England lost £56 million worth of funding [...]. High inflation rates and a cost-of-living crisis have reduced consumer spending. Within this climate, independent publishers have endured a significant rise in paper costs, printing and distribution."
The director added: "Despite this landscape, we believe that Tilted Axis Press matters. We are raising money because writers from the Global Majority need to be translated and read across the world. We believe in the importance of intersectional literature and its potential as a political and active space through which community is built."
Tilted Axis Press is offering signed copies of newly published titles and will continue to add more rewards throughout the campaign.
