James Trevelyan has been appointed maternity cover director of The Emma Press, covering the 2023 leave of founder and director Emma Dai’an Wright.
Trevelyan was formerly sales and marketing manager at independent press Penned in the Margins and recently left his position as a literature relationship manager at Arts Council England. As a writer, his debut poetry pamphlet DISSOLVE to: L.A. was published by the Emma Press in 2016.
Trevelyan said: “Having had a close relationship with the Emma Press as a writer and reader since its first pamphlets and anthologies were published in 2012, I’m really honoured to be taking a more hands-on role steering the press in Emma’s absence.
“As it comes to the end of an Arts Council Elevate Grant, it continues to expand its aims and work, while retaining the core principles on which it was founded. I’m excited to help that growth through different books and projects supporting writers and readers in the West Midlands and beyond in 2023.”
Wright added: “I know the press is in excellent hands, and I’m looking forward to taking a step back after 10 years and seeing it exist without me for a bit — the ultimate test for a business that has been breathing along with me for so long.”
The Emma Press was founded by Wright in 2012 and is based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. It publishes poetry pamphlets, fiction chapbooks, short essay collections, illustrated poetry books, and books for children.
It also has a growing list of translations including titles from Latvia, Estonia, Indonesia, Spain and the Netherlands. More recently, it has run workshops on writing for children as part of its mission to increase accessibility to the sector and develop writers towards publication.
The press is currently welcoming calls for submission from 7th to 14th February, seeking proposals from authors of prose pamphlets, children’s poetry (aged eight plus) and children’s fiction (aged eight plus). For more information, authors are encouraged to visit the website theemmapress.com or attend live Q&A sessions on Instagram (17th January) and Twitter (7th February).
