UCLan Publishing has launched a new bookshop on the University of Central Lancashire campus. The Preston-based publisher launched the shop with the aim of expanding its commercial outreach, increasing visibility within the university and showcasing student talent.
It was launched by publisher Hazel Holmes and publishing assistant Charlotte Rothwell, and the aim is eventually for students to partake in running the shop, managing stock and helping with campus events. Alexa Gregson, course leader for the MA in Publishing at the university, said: "The bookshop brings a sense of community to UCLan with a common shared interest of finding a great read among our ever-growing list of books.”
Liz Flanagan, author of Wildsmith: Into the Dark Forest (UCLan Publishing), added: “It was fantastic to see UCLan’s brand new bookshop, the perfect way to showcase and access this wonderful list of books. And to see students staffing the shop and learning the skills of bookselling too was very impressive and testament to the innovation and creativity which is the hallmark of this publisher."
The bookshop has also been well received by master’s students. "The UCLan Bookshop launch was a brilliant opportunity for book lovers in the North to come together,” said Patricia Snake, UCLan Publishing MA student. “I’m really lucky to have been part of such an exciting moment for UCLanPublishing and I’m looking forward to seeing the Northern bookish community go from strength to strength!”
Siobhan Humphries, who is also a UCLan Publishing MA student, added: “It was so lovely to see the UCLan Publishing shop finally up and running. I know it has been many months in the making and it’s such a wonderfully welcoming space that the team have created."
