UCLan Publishing is launching an illustrated chapter book list for younger readers, kicking off with a two-book deal for debut author Emma Finlayson-Palmer’s Autumn Moonbeam series.
Set in a magical world of witches for readers aged five to eight, the series includes themes of following dreams and making friends. Dance Magic will be published in paperback and e-book in July 2022 with Spooky Sleepover to follow in October 2022. Both will be illustrated by Heidi Cannon. Publisher Hazel Holmes bought UK and Commonwealth rights for both books from Veronique Baxter at David Higham.
The synopsis reads: "Autumn Moonbeam loves gymnastics and dance so when Sparkledale Dance Academy have tryouts for their competitive dance team, Black Cats, she thinks it’s the most broom-tastic opportunity ever! Just one problem, Autumn is nervous and worries she won’t make it onto the team. And then she discovers that her nasty neighbour Severina Bloodworth, who is always throwing unpleasant comments her way, is trying out too. But with her best friend Batty by her side can Autumn overcome her shyness, lack of confidence and magical mishaps to be chosen to join Sparkledale Dance Academy?"
Holmes said of the acquisition: said “We're so pleased to have Emma join our team here at UCLan. Autumn Moonbeam is a brilliant character and these stories are the perfect start to our illustrated chapter book list for younger readers.”
Finlayson-Palmer runs #ukteenchat, a writing themed chat on Twitter, where she interviews YA and children's authors. She said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the UCLan family and know that Autumn Moonbeam has found the perfect home.”
