Usborne, Nosy Crow, Summersdale winners at Independent Publishing Awards

Children's publishers Usborne Publishing and Nosy Crow won two awards each at tonight's (February 27th) Independent Publishing Awards, with Usborne taking the Independent Publisher of the Year accolade.

Usborne's founder Peter Usborne was given a standing ovation as he went to collect the Independent Publisher of the Year Award, which he dedicated to his staff. "I am extremely proud," he said. "The staff of Usborne are magic."

Earlier in the evening, when collecting the Children's Publisher of Year Award, Usborne joked that "until two or three years ago I didn't realise we were an independent book publisher". He said that Britain was becoming one of the "greatest exporters of children's books".

Nosy Crow, which was nominated in four categories as a company and had two people nominated in the Young Publisher of the Year category, won two awards. Managing director Kate Wilson accepted the Digital Marketing and International Achievement awards.

The Newcomer Award was for the first time associated with the late Nick Robinson, founder of Robinson Publishing and chairman of Constable & Robinson, whose “entrepreneurialism and spirit of independence inspired many IPG members over the years”. It was won by Critical Publishing.

The awards were presented in Oxford at the Independent Publishers Guild conference.
