Three of the artists shortlisted for this year’s V&A Illustration Awards have been nominated for their work on Folio Society editions.
David McConochie's The Folio Book of Ghost Stories and Simon Pemberton's Shackleton’s Journey (both Folio Society) are battling it out for the Book Cover Design Award. Marina Esmaraldo’s Game of Chance (Arbuthnot Books) joins them on the shortlist.
Waterstones 2015 Book of the Year The Fox and the Star by Coralie Bickford-Smith (Particular Books) has been shortlisted for the Book illustration Award alongside London Sketchbook by Jason Brooks (Laurence King) and The Radetzky March by Tim Laing Folio Society).
Two students from Anglia Ruskin University: Cambridge School of Art and two from Kingston University are in contention for the 2016 Student Illustrator of the year. The student category will be judged by Rafaela Romaya, art director at Canongate and Ruth Prickett, editor at Illustration magazine. The other categories will be judged by Annabell Judd, V&A head of design, dame Jacqueline Wilson; and Patrick Burgoyne, editor at Creative Review.
The winner in each category will receive £3,000 and a trophy. The judges will also select an overall winner to receive an additional £5,000 and the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year prize. The prize is named in memory of Moira Gemmill, the V&A’s former director of design.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the V&A on 23rd May 2016 and the winning works will be on display at the V&A from 24 May until 21st August 2016.
