Valley Press, a small independent press based in Yorkshire, is reviving its imprint Lendal Press, and has hired Juliette Tomlinson as managing editor.
Tomlinson moves from her role at Oxford University Press (OUP). The press is also opening for submissions, and is looking for works of literary fiction, novels and short story collections under 120k words.
Tomlinson’s speciality is in sales and previously spent seven years at OUP, following 13 years at Signature. She is also skilled at publicity, and will work alongside Valley’s sales agency, Inpress.
Tomlinson said: "Literary fiction is my passion, and I am delighted to be part of the Valley and Lendal Press story, championing its authors and finding new voices and words to showcase this wonderful publisher."
Lendal Press is a hybrid imprint. Authors are asked to contribute half of an agreed budget based on word count and in return, their book will be given editorial, design and print treatments. The author will be paid 10% of the book’s RRP for each copy sold, and 100 copies of the finished paperback.
Valley Press was founded in Scarborough in 2008 by Jamie McGarry, and Lendal Press was named after a bridge built in York in 1860. After collapsing, it was salvaged and rebuilt in Scarborough as Valley Bridge in 1865, and still spans the steep valley that divides the town.
