Author Vanessa Onwuemezi, Granta editor Dan Bird and Lucy Luck, agent at C&W Agency, will judge the Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize 2024.
Now in its sixth year, the prize is open to UK based writers with the 12 longlisted stories to be published in an anthology by Brick Lane Bookshop. The winner will receive £1,000 and a development meeting, a year’s membership to the London Writers’ Network and four places on workshop and courses through the prize’s partner, Spread the Word.
Short story publisher Scratch Books will also offer editorial feedback to the top three authors and publish their stories on their website. The London Magazine will also publish one of the longlisted entries. The authors who place second and third will also receive £500 and £250, respectively.
Luck commented: "I am susceptible to a beautifully crafted short story that lands and a voice that rings completely true from the first line."
Entries are open from 30th January until 7th April 2024 and cost £10 per submission. Fifty free entries are available for authors with low income and entrants can pay forward an entry for a low income writer. Submissions should be an unpublished works of fiction between 1,000 and 5,000 words.
