Viking has announced the launch of a five-book series entitled Penguin Weird Fiction.
The series will bring together writers of horror, fantasy and science fiction who “radically reinterpreted” their genres. It will feature William Hope Hodgson’s House on the Borderland, Robert W Chambers’ The King in Yellow alongside “unearthed gems”, including Claimed! by Gertrude Barrows Bennett and tales from Algernon Blackwood’s collection, Ancient Sorceries. Viking will also publish Weird Ficton, an anthology of stories featuring H P Lovecraft, Edith Wharton and Arthur Conan Doyle, among others.
The series will be published in paperback on 17th October with a series look designed by deputy art director Chris Bentham and illustrations from Kate Dehler.
Edward Kirke, editor, said: “Penguin Weird Fiction is a store of novels and stories that for generations have delighted and horrified. Reading these books today, the imagination, originality and sheer terror on display still sets one’s heart racing. I am exceptionally excited to be shining a light on this writing and hope the series offers treats (or tricks?) for old and new fans alike.”
