The 2024 Vintage Red Spine Independent Bookshop Award winner has been named as Haslemere Bookshop.
The shop was given the award for their window filled with handmade paper versions of the new red spine covers, which "stopped passersby in their tracks".
Second and third place were awarded to Little Ripon and Nomad Books for their celebratory red-bedecked windows.
The award, to coincide with the launch of the Vintage Classics redesigned editions on 4th July, invited Independent Bookshops of all sizes across the country to share their window or shop displays, with prizes for the "most creative and passionate promotions".
The judging panel was made up of Suzanne Dean, creative director at Vintage; Evie Wyld, author of The Echoes; Meryl Halls, managing director of The Booksellers Association; Natasha Onwuemezi, journalist at The Bookseller and Sophie Painter, former head of marketing at Vintage.
The judges awarded the £1,000 first place prize to Haslemere for their "eye-catching window, their in-shop book group and championing of the relaunch on social media".
Haslemere will also receive a Vintage Classics spinner, while Little Ripon will receive a cheque for £500 and Nomad Books will receive a cheque for £250. All of the awarded bookshops will also receive Vintage Classics goody bags.
A spokesperson for Haslemere Bookshop said: "We have loved promoting the Red Spine series in the shop this summer, with titles ranging from the very familiar To Kill a Mockingbird to the lesser-well-known but equally brilliant I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman (a Haslemere Bookshop favourite). There’s truly been something for everyone! We were thrilled to win the competition and will continue to promote this fantastic range of books – a red spine classic isn’t just for summer!"
Halls said: "It was great to be part of the Red Spine Award – it’s always a treat to see bookshop creativity up close and it was wonderful to see the range of window, social media and instore promotions going on for the uber-stylish Vintage list. Wonderful too to see a publisher engaging with bookshops in this creative and collegiate way, rewarding them for their energy and their commitment to the books."
