Vintage is releasing a new eight-book eco-themed series this July, with Monique Roffey’s The Mermaid of Black Conch, Ian McEwan’s Solar, and Richard Powers’ The Overstory among those being republished with new covers.
Also included in the limited Vintage Earth series will be The Wall by Marlen Haushofer, The Man with the Compound Eyes by Wu Ming-Yi, The Tusk That Did the Damage by Tania James, The Last Quarter of the Moon by Chi Zijan and The Man Who Planted Trees by Jean Giono.
The series aims to connect readers with outstanding writing and compelling stories of the natural world. The publisher said: “Each book is a work of creative activism, a blast of fresh air, a seed from which change can grow.”
Vintage said it would be backed by "unmissable" marketing, publicity and brand campaigns.
Charlotte Knight, Vintage Classics senior editor, said: “I am excited to see the range of books in this series brought together by the most important issue of our day. Old and new, from around the world and across genres, each of these novels has something powerful to say about the natural world. My hope is that every reader finds a story here that speaks to them.”
Natasha Collie, brand director, added that great storytelling can be a uniquely powerful tool in changing the ways that we think and live. She said: "Each of the novels in this beautifully designed collection encourages us to reflect on our interactions with nature, through the medium of gripping fiction."
