Walker Books has signed comedy horror middle grade series Theodora Hendrix and the Monstrous League of Monsters by debut author Jordan Kopy.
The deal was struck by Emma Lidbury at Walker Books, who snapped up world rights in all languages for three books from Alice Sutherland-Hawes at Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency. The first book will publish in October 2020, highly illustrated in black and white by Chris Jevons (artwork acquired through The Bright Agency).
“The story follows a girl called Theodora, who was abandoned as a baby and brought up in secret in a house full of monsters – including Mummy the mummy, Figaro the singing ghost and Sherman the talking, top-hat-wearing tarantula,” reads the synopsis. “When Theodora is ten-years-old, a stranger learns of her unusual family and sends anonymous letters threatening to expose them. For they have broken the first rule of the MLM: Keep monsters hidden from humans. If Theodora doesn’t act fast, she may lose her family altogether.”
Lidbury said: “This sharp, witty debut features a remarkably well-adjusted 10-year-old growing up in a remarkably unusual family. Jordan has created an engaging, likeable heroine in Theodora and devised a clever story arc that will have readers rooting for her all the way. And Jordan’s imagination is limitless – I suspect we will see many, many more monsters before the series is out!”
Kopy added: “I am ecstatic to be partnering with Walker Books for my debut novel, Theodora Hendrix and the Monstrous League of Monsters. As a long-time reader of children’s fiction, I can think of no better home for Theodora Hendrix, and have been blown away by the team’s enthusiasm and vision not only for this novel, but for the entire series.”
