Waterstones is closing The Economists' Bookshop in central London and its Lincoln Exchange branch.
Originally founded in 1947, the Economists' Bookshop was initially sponsored by The Economist magazine and the London School of Economics before moving under the Waterstones umbrella in 1992. Situated in Clare Market in Holborn, it served as a campus bookshop at the heart of the London School of Economics.
A Waterstones spokesperson said: “For untold numbers of students, the Economists’ has been their valued academic and cultural touchstone. Our team at our Gower Street academic flagship look forward to welcoming the Economists’ loyal customers and to continue that specialist service.”
Meanwhile the Lincoln branch had been part of the city's Grade II-listed Exchange Arcade since 2005. Waterstones said: “We are very grateful for the support of our customers over the years, and will welcome them into our Lincoln High Street bookshop once we can reopen our doors for browsing again.”
The latest closures come after the chain permanently shut a number of stores last year, with branches at Milton Keynes' MK Shopping Centre, Lancaster's King Street, Hull University and Essex University all closing.
Waterstones also made 16 head office roles redundant in 2000 to “safeguard” the firm's future in a challenging year when the pandemic saw high street stores hit by successive lockdowns.
