Wildfire has signed a book by British Cycling doctor Richard Freeman, who has treated some of the world's most successful cyclists including Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Bradley Wiggins, Laura Trott and Victoria Pendleton.
In The Line, Freeman, a former team doctor for British Cycling and Team Sky between 2009 and 2017, will shed light on the medical principles and practices that have helped lead athletes to Olympic and Tour de France victory.
According to Wildfire, Dr Freeman will explain the importance of an holistic approach in the book: from the psychology of the rider to the importance of athlete welfare; the prevention and treatment of injuries to the importance of proper recovery, including practical tips for amateur riders. He will also give a "frank and open" account in response to allegations of misuse of medical treatment to enhance performance.
Alex Clarke, publishing director of Wildfire Books who acquired world rights direct from the author, called it a "truly inspiring" read for anyone with an interest in endurance sport.
"Doctor Freeman’s book is an incredible insight into the world of high-performance sport, and just how much these elite athletes, put their bodies on the line," he said. "He has treated some of the all-time great names in the world of Olympic and Grand Tour cycling, and earned their respect, trust and friendship – by always putting their health first. It’s fascinating to hear all about the doctor’s incredible work in supporting his patients, and helping them stay fit and healthy as they train, recover and compete. Richard Freeman also gives really clear and game-changing advice for the amateur. The Line is a truly inspiring book that anyone with an interest in endurance sport should read."
The name for the book was borne out of Dr Freeman's philosophy that "patients and their coaches are given the best medical advice to ensure that they are able to reach their own inherent best performance without ever crossing the medical or sporting ethical line ... It’s never about winning at all costs".
Dr Freeman added: "In The Line, I hope to give an insight into how a new integrated performance health management and coaching model has supported some of our great sporting heroes in achieving their goals."
