Fourth Estate has pre-empted How to Be Sad by Helen Russell, described as "part grief memoir, part manifesto for a change in the way we talk about our emotions".
Publishing director Louise Haines acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Anna Power at Johnson & Alcock. The book will be published in early 2021.
The synopsis states: "How to Be Sad explores why it’s important to embrace sorrow; the truth about crying; and how we can all get happier—by learning how to be sad, better. Russell has earned a reputation as a go-to source for happiness globally. Now, through a combination of research and reflections on her own family history, she’ll be exploring the less sunny side of life."
Russell is the bestselling author of two books on happiness, including The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World’s Happiest Country (Icon).
Haines said: "Helen is a writer I have admired for ages and we are thrilled that she is joining the Fourth Estate list."
Russell added: "I’m really looking forward to working with Louise and honoured to be publishing How to Be Sad with Fourth Estate—an imprint that’s taken up considerable space on my bookshelves for years."
