Ad Lib has snapped up Unequal, an "important and timely" book on democracy from David Buckham, Robyn Wilkinson and Christiaan Straeuli.
Editorial director Duncan Proudfoot acquired world rights, excluding southern Africa, from Tim Richman at Burnet Media, SA. The book will be published in paperback and e-book on 13th April 2023.
"In pulling together seemingly disparate strands of finance, economics, culture, ideology and geopolitics, it leaves the reader with a real understanding of why the world is the way it is today," said Richman.
Unequal traces a line from the "robber barons of the 1990s tech revolution to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, citing the marginalisation of democratic principles which has enabled the rise of authoritarian populists such as Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong-un, Jair Bolsonaro and, of course, Donald Trump and Boris Johnson". The book addresses "the extreme, and growing, inequality which is the scourge of the modern world and a great danger to liberal democracy".
Proudfoot commented: "This is an important and timely book, also a very readable one, making clear how liberal democracy is no longer bolstered by capitalism, but in thrall to it. It’s not too late, as the concerted effort by the West to defend democracy in Ukraine against authoritarian Russia shows, to try to restore democratic principles, rather than simply facilitate economic systems powered by greed alone."
